What does the SmartLipo procedure involve?
The SmartLipo procedure involves introduction of a 1mm laser cannula under the skin (hypodermis) where we find the fat tissue in the human body. This is performed under LOCAL anaesthetic. After puberty the fat cells (adipocytes) remain constant in number and they change their size and volume according to the lipid content the body decides to store. Sometimes this fat assumes abnormal proportions in well-defined areas (lipodistrophies) modifying the natural silhouette of the body (CELLULITE). SmartLipo helps the surgeon to re-establish this natural silhouette, giving back better curves and shape. The fact that we only get a finite number of fat cells when we become an adult, means that the results of this procedure are PERMANENT.
How does it work?
SmartLipo, using a pulsed Nd:YAG laser system, is able to break down the membranes of fat cells without inducing mechanical trauma to the skin as in liposuction techniques. The dispersed fat then naturally leaves the body over 4 to 10 weeks through the lymphatic vessels. The stimulation of fibroblast cells in the skin by the technique, causes the skin to tighten over the next 2 - 6 months, reducing the flabby skin effect associated with other techniques. It has been shown beneficial in reducing SURGICAL SCARS and STRETCH MARKS
How does it feel to have SmartLipo?
The initial introduction of the local anaesthetic through a cannula, can be associated with a pulling and pushing sensation which passes very quickly; the passage of the Laser itself is painless and very quick. You DO NOT need to be put to sleep ! After the procedure dressings are applied to the puncture in the skin where the laser was introduced, and a compression garment is then warn for comfort and to assist in fat drainage, for 2 days - 2 weeks depending on the area. Most patients do not need any oral post-procedure pain relief, but simple paracetamol or ibuprofen is sufficient.
How long does the treatment take?
A face and neck take about 45 minutes, whereas a larger tummy may take a couple of hours.
Is it safe?
Yes, it is. Because it targets fat cells specifically, with no danger of damaging neighbouring muscles or nerves.
Is there any skin or health condition that may not be suitable to undergo this procedure?
Patients need must be in good health. Those who have heart problems or blood pressure problems or diabetes should consult their GP for advice before considering any procedures.
Is there any downtime?
Downtime is reduced at one week maximum. This does not limit the working and social activities. Most people can return to normal activities straight away. We have had patients who have driven over 250 miles to have the procedure, have driven home and then gone shopping! It truly is a "Lunchtime" procedure.
Does it give a permanent effect?
Yes, it does. We are born with a fixed number of fat cells and have no capacity to repair/heal fat in the human body.
Is there a need for oral medication after the treatment?
Usually not, we suggest a short-term antibiotic treatment, which can be taken orally. We provide ARNICA homoeopathic medication to reduce the development of bruising or swelling, and some mild analgesics which invariably, are NOT needed.
How much does it cost?
Areas of fat that affect both sides are considered as ONE area for the purposes of treatment. We charge £2000 per area which includes all your consultations, medical photography, medical disposables and medications and compression garments. If we are able to treat two areas simultaneously, e.g. doing aface and the upper arms, we would charge £1500 -1750 depending on the patient and size. A third area, if appropriate would be £1000 - 1250.
On booking your appointment for treatment, we take a £500 deposit for your laser cannula and equipment costs up front. This is deducted from the cost of your Smartlipo procedure.
