Under local anaesthesia injected into the skin, small punctures are made strategically (usually along creases that conceal the tiny scar) and the VASER probe is inserted under the skin into the fat layer. The ultrasonic waves destroy the fats selectively. After this, a hollow tube attached to a pump, is inserted under the skin to drain out the oil and fat cell debris. During the procedure, there is no pain. After the anaesthesia has worn off, it only feels like the aches and pains that follow a vigorous workout. This is UNLIKE in traditional liposuction where a patient feels as if a truck was driven over the body. The bruises too are much less with VASER.
Compression garments are applied after the surgery and patients go home to rest.
Follow-ups are very important. At one month post-operation, we will discuss the results with our patients.
How is VASER less traumatic?
Fat cells are broken up first before suction is applied. As such, VASER is associated with significantly less bruises, swelling and post-operative discomfort than conventional liposuction. Conventional liposuction uses both the suction power and the surgeon’s elbow strength to pull out chunks of fat. Often, nerves, blood vessels and even muscle fibres are pulled out as well. With VASER, the previously destroyed fat cells and the oil comes out gently and with ease once ASPIRATION is applied on the area.
Because it is this gentle, the treated areas also look smoother (no lumpiness) and tighter than with conventional liposuction. Read about our views on Liposuction in general.
Recovery-time depends on extent of VASER
The main discomfort is like the aches after a vigorous workout. When small areas like the abdomen-only are treated with VASER, some of these patients even return to work the next day. Of course we normally advise a few days of rest.
When more areas are treated, like combination of abdomen-front / abdomen-sides / thighs, patients may go out to the supermarket the next day and return to work within 3 days. A week’s rest is usually advised.
“Healing-tissue” and “healing-fluids” occupy the areas where subcutaneous fat was EMULSIFIED, and as such the area may appear the same size or sometimes slightly larger. But right away, all patients can feel the areas as already having less fat when squeezed between the fingers.
One week later
Swelling would have decreased slightly, but we may apply radiofrequency to the areas and all the swelling will disappear very quickly. This is also the time we remove stitches, if any.
One month later
It is only after one month or more that the “healing-tissues” fully reorganize back to the feeling of normal skin. The overlying skin contracts such that often stretch marks and loose skin appears less obvious.
Three months on
It would be very hard to find the insertion points or tell by looking at the skin that any procedure has ever been done. Skin feels like normal skin again.
Is it safe?
VASER is safer than traditional liposuction because there is less bleeding. The fact that we do the procedure under tumescent technique eliminates a lot of risks normally associated with general anaesthesia. Of course the greatest safety aspect is choosing the right doctor for the job. With more than 4 years experience in Smartlipo and more than 400 cases of Smartlipo, we are one of the most experienced clinics performing VASER Lipo-ASPIRATION. And because we perform such surgeries almost every day, we are prepared and equipped to deal with anything that can arise.
